Social platforms are excellent for reach and activity

Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube and other platforms can show personality, publish frequent updates and meet customers where they already spend time. They are useful for events, new products, behind-the-scenes content, community interaction and visual storytelling.

A website gives the business more control

On your own site, you control the structure, presentation, calls to action and depth of information. A service can have a complete page instead of a short caption. A case study can stay accessible long after a social post disappears from the feed. Your domain also remains portable if a platform changes its algorithm, features or policies.

Customers use them differently

A person browsing social media may discover a business casually. A person searching for “landscape designer near me,” comparing service pages or checking reviews before booking has a different intent. The website is often where that higher-intent visitor looks for details and reassurance.

Search engines need crawlable information

A well-structured website can create dedicated pages for services, locations, FAQs, projects and articles. Those pages give search systems more context about what the business does. Social profiles may appear in search results too, but they do not replace the control and depth of an owned site.

Use social media to create interest; use the website to organize it

  • Link social profiles to a relevant website page, not always just the homepage.
  • Turn recurring social questions into useful FAQ or service content.
  • Use the website for booking, estimates, detailed policies or long-form proof.
  • Repurpose website articles into shorter social posts rather than creating two unrelated content systems.
  • Keep branding and contact information consistent across channels.

What if a business can only manage one?

The answer depends on how customers buy. A creator whose business happens almost entirely inside one social platform may prioritize that channel. A local service company that depends on search, referrals and quote requests usually benefits from an owned website much earlier.

The practical question is maintenance. One useful website plus one actively maintained social channel is usually stronger than five abandoned profiles and an outdated site.

Think of the website as the home base and social media as distribution. The two are strongest when each sends useful traffic to the other.
